8-bit Huffman Encoder (Static Table)
Streaming Huffman encoder for 8-bit symbols using a precomputed static code table and ready/valid handshakes.
About this block
Simulate it in the Verilog IDE
8-bit Huffman Encoder (Static Table) is a SystemVerilog reference block in the Coding & Line Codes catalog. Line codes, serializers, and digital encoding/decoding blocks. Marked Hard: a larger reference. Simulate the packaged testbench before you change the RTL.
This IP encodes an 8-bit symbol stream into variable-length Huffman codewords using a fixed lookup table. Input and output use ready/valid handshaking; out_eof marks end-of-frame after the last accepted input byte.
Suitable as a teaching/reference encoder block where table-based Huffman mapping is acceptable instead of dynamic tree building.
- Choose Open in IDE. RTL Studio loads the packaged workspace for 8-bit Huffman Encoder (Static Table).
- Read the SystemVerilog module in the editor. The catalog line for this block: Streaming Huffman encoder for 8-bit symbols using a precomputed static code table and ready/valid handshakes.
- Run the packaged testbench with the in-browser Verilator simulator, then open the VCD in the waveform viewer.
- Run Yosys in the same IDE for a generic netlist. Sky130 liberty mapping is a separate Pro library option.
RTL Studio is the Verilog simulator and IDE around this block: Slang lint, Verilator, VCD waveforms, and Yosys, in the browser. Simulation guide · Yosys guide.
Features
- Static Huffman table for 256 ASCII-oriented symbols.
- Streaming interface with
in_valid/in_readyandout_valid/out_ready. - End-of-frame signaling via
out_eof. - Verilator-safe testbench with self-checking test cases.

Verification
Run make sim in the IP leaf (Verilator + C++ wrapper). The log must contain INFO: PASS for promotion.
